Integrated Simulation and Hardware-in-the-Loop Analysis of ISO15118-Based Smart EV Charging Communication Systems

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingChapter

Abstract

A combustion-engine vehicle can be refueled quickly but is not very impressive. Electric vehicle (EV) operation differs significantly from conventional vehicles. Car and charging station manufacturers must manage and optimize the battery charging process. Charging operation is more complex than it appears, especially with the switch to alternative energy sources and the upcoming smart grid. Factors like station power, battery health, and charging demand should be considered. Intelligent charging in accordance with ISO 15118 will become standard. Key challenges include communication between vehicles and charging stations and the distribution of electrical energy. This paper presents EV-EVSE (Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment) communication and analyzes various factors. The study describes a system architecture enabling real-time communication between EV, EVSE, and the Charging Station Management System. Vector CANoe provides tools for creating, evaluating, and assessing ECU networks and units. The VT System with Smart Charging Module VT7970 controls ECU I/O connections during testing. This article introduces a Combined Charging System utilizing Vector tools, with EV-EVSE message exchange via ISO 15118 over Power-Line Communication, and analyzes their communication. The EV-EVSE simulation results are displayed visually and synchronized with the trace window, achieved when hardware and software are combined in a suitable loop.
