Introduction to IoMT security and challenges

The Internet of Multimedia Things (IoMT) extends the Internet of Things (IoT) with multimedia information—images, sound, and video—to intelligent systems for real-time observation, interactive communication, and intelligent decision-making. This chapter discusses the development, architecture, major components, and use of IoMT in healthcare, smart cities, industrial automation, and entertainment sectors. Security and privacy are the most prevalent issues in IoMT because of the vast quantity of multimedia data, which result in threats such as unauthorized use, data leakage, and cyberattacks. IoMT ecosystems require protection using solutions like encryption, authentication, and Digital Rights Management (DRM). Interoperability and regulatory systems are also vital in providing secure and seamless multimedia interoperation. IoMT uses include smart monitoring, telemedicine, intelligent traffic management, and multimedia streaming, which can be accelerated by artificial intelligence, edge computing, and 5G. Both technical and ethical issues must be overcome for the sustainable development of IoMT. IoMT will transform digital ecosystems, stimulating innovation across industries and enhancing the rich multimedia user experiences.
