    Abstract

We live in an internet-based world, and our personal and professional lives are more intertwined. The ever-evolving technological landscape presents boundless possibilities, but it also ushers in new threats that challenge industries, governments, and institutions worldwide. Of paramount concern is the insidious realm of social engineering, which preys upon an organization’s most invaluable asset: its people. Social engineers adeptly exploit the inherent psychological vulnerabilities of humans through sophisticated attacks, casting a dark shadow over cybersecurity in the digital age. Leveraging deception and manipulation in human-computer interactions, these attackers relentlessly target privacy and cybersecurity concerns while leaving a trail of compromised intellectual property, confidential data, and financial resources in their wake. Consequently, institutions must remain unwaveringly prepared for the multifaceted arsenal of attacks that may be deployed against them and demonstrate not only readiness but also a willingness to adapt through innovative defense strategies. This chapter provides a comprehensive overview of the contemporary landscape of social engineering attacks, their classification, and a diverse array of mitigation strategies that organizations can employ to safeguard their most precious asset in the face of these relentless and ever-evolving threats.
