Abstract

The Internet of Things (IoT) has transformed the digital world, linking billions of devices in healthcare, smart homes, transportation, and agriculture. While increased connectivity improves convenience and productivity, it has also created humongous security threats and forensic challenges. The nature of IoT devices is such that they produce enormous amounts of data, offering potential for forensic analysis but making the processes of data acquisition, preservation, and analysis challenging due to their heterogeneity and resource constraint. This review gives an overall assessment of the state of the art of IoT forensics with a special focus on the specific challenges that arise from the IoT environment. The primary challenges are the lack of standardization of forensic tools, the difficulty in extracting evidence from complex ecosystems of IoT devices, privacy, and the risk of tampering with the information. Application of non-forensic and commercial tools has been promising but consequently has created the need for specialized frameworks and approaches specifically designed for IoT-specific cases. Recent techniques-like electromagnetic side-channel analysis and machine learning-promise to potentially improve forensic investigations; however, in practice, applications are very few due to technical and logistic barriers. This would also ensure integrity and immutability in the data by blockchain integration on one side and, on the other, developing extensible plug-ins for diverse IoT devices; artificial intelligence will also be essential in analyzing complex datasets. Case studies depict how traces left behind by IoT devices, from wearables to smart home systems, have been instrumental in providing crucial evidence in investigations. However, this remains theoretical and has seen no practical large-scale implementation-the gap that needs bridging with frameworks. We have also identified open research directions, such as the requirement for interoperable forensic tools, scalable frameworks for analyzing IoT-generated data, and privacy-preserving mechanisms. Addressing these challenges will make IoT forensics a strong discipline that can rise to the current and future demands of supporting law enforcement and cybersecurity efforts in an increasingly interconnected world.
