Abstract
Investigation of the pathogenic microbial flora of sea fish and fresh water mussels revealed the presence of enteropathic Escherichia coli strains in the slime over the body, and intestinal and cloacal contents. A total of 39 isolates were obtained. Serotype 086, 0111 and 0119 from Rastrelliger kanagurta (mackerel), 055 and 0111 from Sardinella longiceps (sardine) and 0111 and 0127 from Lamellidens marginalis (fresh water mussel) were isolated. This observation suggests that these sea foods may be responsible for outbreaks of gastroenteritis in children.
