N2 - Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs) have become an integral part of contemporary power systems. They provide accurate and efficient measurements with time synchronization, which is important for locating where the PMU is placed. So, for any modern power system it is ideal to have PMUs installed in it for its monitoring and controlling. PMUs in future will replace the present-day technology of SCADA based monitoring systems. The main problem in installing a PMU in any system is that an optimal number of PMUs have to be placed in a power system so that the cost of PMUs does not shoot up astronomically. So, the problem placement of PMUs has to be solved. There are mainly two methods which solve the Optimal PMU Placement (OPP) problem I) Mathematical methods II) Heuristic methods. This paper reviews the two broad methods and provides a comparison along with their characterization.
