Mammography—sentinel of breast cancer management

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingChapter

Abstract

Breast cancer is the most common malignancy encountered globally, with over 2 million newly diagnosed cases as per the latest GLOBOCON data (Bray et al., 2018). For decades, mammopraphy has played a pivotal role in the screening and diagnosis of tumours afflicting the breast. Despite several limitations, the role of mammograms has been well established in clinical practice. Furthermore, various modifications have improved the sensitivity and specificity of this diagnostic modality, keeping it relevant despite the emergence of newer modalities. In this chapter we look at the science behind mammography, its clinical applications and limitations, recent advances and modifications, and its outlook in screening and diagnosis of breast cancer.
