Meal induced dyslipidemia in type 2 diabetes mellitus

Abstract

Introduction: Diabetes is a common metabolic disorder often associated with dyslipidemia. There is altered response in postprandial lipoprotein metabolism which is found to be associated with cardiovascular disease. Aim: Hence fasting and post meal lipids were analysed in controlled and poorly controlled diabetes mellitus. Materials and methods: Total 60 type 2 diabetic patients on oral hypoglycemic (duration 5-15 years) were enrolled into the study. They were divided based on HbA1c values as Group1 (7.5%) and Group2 (7.6%). Plasma glucose and serum lipid parameters both in fasting (F) and 2 hrs post meal (PP) were assayed. Results: Fasting and 2 hours postmeal plasma glucose values were in accordance with HbA1c values. Significant increase in PP TG(p<0.001) and decrease in PP LDL-C(p<0.001) were found in both the groups. TC, HDL-C and TC/HDL-C ratio in fasting and PP state was comparable in both the groups. Conclusion: Among diabetic subjects there is a post meal dysmetabolism of lipids in the form of raised TG and low LDL-C which was not augmented by poor glycaemia.
