Metastatic breast cancer in the era of targeted systemic and localized therapies

Standard therapy for metastatic breast cancer (MBC) includes systemic medications, which are sometimes coupled with targeted treatments aimed at symptom reduction. Nonetheless, the identification of oligometastatic and oligoprogressive illness states has become more widespread due to the development of novel targeted medications as well as advancements in metabolic and radiological diagnostics. The role of targeted treatments, like as radiation, is being reevaluated because of this shift. Depending on the patient’s immunophenotype, radiation may now be radicalized. Early metastasis detection enhances disease management and opens up new therapeutic choices and is made feasible by targeted drugs and improved imaging. For example, radiation therapy may have both palliative and perhaps curative effects, depending on the clinical circumstances. This book chapter aims to provide an overview of the clinical data currently available about the prognosis of bone metastases from breast cancer and the efficacy of different treatment approaches. Through this process, the goal is to provide a valuable guide that will enable healthcare providers to make decisions that will optimize patient outcomes and quality of life. This approach highlights the need to combine systemic and local therapy to address the various needs of patients with MBC.
