Abstract

The flexor compartment of the forearm have two groups of muscles i.e., superficial and deep. The dimensions of the muscle length and tendon length show a lot of variation. A comprehensive study of these is greatly useful in tendon transfer surgeries. Also the tendons of flexor digitorum superficialis, flexor digitorum profundus and flexor pollicis longus insert in the hand by passing through the carpal tunnel. Compression in the tunnel maybe due to aberrant tendons and anomalous muscle bellies. Hence a detailed study of the origin, insertion and length of muscle belly and tendon is useful. So our aim is to study the origin, insertion and morphometric dimensions of all the flexor group of muscles of the forearm. Dissection of the forearms and hand of 20 cadavers was meticulously done. Measurements of whole muscle length was taken from its highest point of origin upto its insertion. Tendon length was measured from a point where there was no muscle fibre was seen. The length of the muscle belly and tendon length was tabulated. Knowledge of the length of muscle belly and tendon is useful in surgical procedures such as tendon transfers. Also any variation is useful in the study of cause of carpal tunnel syndrome and its surgical management.
