Multicomponent adsorption and the interaction between the adsorbent and the adsorbate: A review

Research output: Contribution to journalReview articlepeer-review

    Abstract

Due to the industrial development and the various toxic chemicals released into the environment, the water pollution is considered as the main issue of global concern. The industrial wastewater contains various pollutants such as organic compounds, heavy metals, dyes and other toxic chemicals. The pollutants present in the wastewater can be treated efficiently by adsorption. The adsorption in multicomponent solution involves the factors like complicate interaction and competition between the solute molecules for the adsorbent. Therefore, it is required to study the mechanism of adsorption of pollutants in multicomponent mixture. Thus the multicomponent adsorption of pollutants using various adsorbents is reviewed in the present work. The different possible interaction mechanisms like synergism, antagonism and non-interaction for adsorption are investigated and discussed.
