Multimodal therapies for residual, recurrent, and metastatic breast cancer

Abstract

Breast cancer remains one of the major health burdens and a leading cause of death in women globally. Even with the advances in early detection, hormone treatments, targeted therapies, and other treatment options, a significant number of cases of breast cancer still reach advanced stages. Treatment strategies for breast cancer depend on the type of breast cancer and the extent of its spread. Chemotherapy continues to play a primary role in the management of residual, recurrent, and metastatic breast cancer. Other treatment options, like surgery, radiotherapy, immunotherapies, hormonal therapy, and targeted therapies, are also employed to treat residual, recurrent, and metastatic breast cancer. The optimal course of treatment and care for breast cancer will be discussed by a multidisciplinary team comprising physicians and other health profession experts. Based on the observation and type of breast cancer, patients can undergo single therapy or combination therapy to manage the breast cancer. In this review, we have discussed different therapeutic strategies for residual, recurrent, and metastatic breast cancer.
