Nature-based Solutions for the Management of Urban Wastewater

    Abstract

    Urban water encompasses the entirety of water present within urban areas and includes natural surface water, groundwater, drinking water, sewage, stormwater, flood overflow water, and recycled water. Given the rapid pace of industrialization and economic growth in urban areas, coupled with the generation of substantial amounts of industrial effluents, an undeniable strain is placed upon limited water resources. The potential impact of climate change on the water cycle is expected to be significant, and it is crucial to understand and address this issue. Consequently, urban water challenges must be approached with integrated methods, as relying solely on traditional water management techniques is not sustainable. Furthermore, conventional wastewater treatment methods often rely on energy-intensive and costly technologies, which may not be feasible in the long run. In response, many cities are now adopting nature-based solutions (NBSs) as an indispensable component of their water management strategies. By utilizing natural processes and ecosystems for wastewater treatment—such as constructed wetlands, green roofs, permeable pavement, bioretention systems, rain gardens, and riparian buffers—these approaches offer sustainable, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly solutions with long-term performance capabilities. In light of these considerations, this chapter emphasizes the importance of recognizing the urgent need for water recovery and reuse while ensuring the protection and preservation of water resources and natural capital in urban settings.
