Nutraceuticals for the prevention of stroke and cerebrovascular injury: An overview

Abstract

Nutraceuticals are fortified functional food that provides diverse health benefits through both prevention and treatment of a broad spectrum of human diseases and dysfunctions. Nutraceuticals including micronutrients (vitamins and microminerals), minerals, dietary fiber, antioxidants, essential fatty acids, and different botanical supplements along with physical exercise are recommended for the prevention and treatment of various vascular diseases including stroke. This chapter comprehensively reviews and explores the opportunity of various nutraceuticals and functional foods that can be recommended for neuroprotection. These comprise vitamin A, vitamin B complex, vitamin C, vitamin D, vitamin E, coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10), zinc, selenium, magnesium, omega-3 fatty acid (ω-3 FAs), policosanol, bioflavonoids, acetyl-l-carnitine, d-ribose, aged garlic extract (AGE), gingko, astragalus, hawthorn berry, elderberry, gotu kola, ginger, turmeric, cinnamon, tea, and coffee.
