Abstract
Recent advances in technology have presented viable dosage alternative for patients who may have difficulty in swallowing tablets or capsules. A fast dissolving tablets is one such approach. Granisetron hydrochloride is a novel anti-emetic, serotonin receptor (5-HT3) antagonist used in the prevention of chemotherapy induced nausea and vomiting. In the present study, an attempt has been made to formulate, optimize and evaluate fast dissolving tablets of granisetron hydrochloride by the use of superdisintegrants. Direct compression method was employed for cost effectiveness. A novel diluent (a combination of mannitol and silicified microcrystalline cellulose (SMCC) in the ratio 70:30 was used in the study. Formulations containing crospovidone and croscarmellose sodium displayed shortest disintegration time compared to other disintegrants. Sensory test of the prepared tablets were devoid of any grittiness.
