Abstract
Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) was originally named hypernephroma due to its histologic resemblance to the adrenal gland. In 1960, Oberling et al1 demonstrated its origin from the proximal renal tubule based on the ultrastructural features. The tumor was then renamed renal cell adenocarcinoma or renal cell carcinoma.
