Phenol adsorption from wastewater using betel nut shell as adsorbent

    Abstract

    The potential of betel nut shell as an adsorbent for the removal of phenol from wastewater was investigated. The betel nut shell was chemically treated with hydrochloric acid in order to improve the properties. The influence of operating conditions like adsorbent dosage and pH were studied. The isotherm and thermodynamic experiments were conducted at temperatures 25°C, 35°C and 45°C. The kinetic experiments were done at concentration values of 20-100 mg/L. The isotherm data were following Langmuir model and the kinetic data obeyed second order model. Thermodynamic studies showed that the process in spontaneous in nature.
