Phytochemicals: recent trends in food, pharmacy, and biotechnology

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingChapter

Abstract

Phytochemicals are referred to as biologically active compounds that have certain medicinal properties, and it has been demonstrated from previous studies that these compounds are traditionally used in remedies for certain diseases. With the advancements of modern science as well as technology, the researcher is more concerned about the potential uses of such biologically active compounds. The fundamental purpose of this study is to determine the numerous features of phytochemicals in food, medicine, and biotechnology. The current study revolves around the identification of the phytochemicals and their uses. The analysis in the study involves the use of such products as by-products. The study has also revealed that the phytocompounds have other multifaceted uses including the use in drug delivery, as anticancer, antimicrobial, and antioxidant agents. On the other hand, the study also shows the compounds that have certain pharmaceutical value and have already been expressed to have several medicinal properties. In spite of all the advancements in the research of such compounds, there are certain limitations due to the less availability of information in the literature in this study; therefore, an extensive amount of in vivo and in vitro studies is required in order to establish the accurate use of the phytochemicals and makes the best use of such compounds in improving human health and the quality of human life.
