Abstract

A study is presented of 12 cases of polymyositis. The natural history, clinical features, biochemical and histopathological changes, response to treatment with corticosteroids and difficulties in diagnosis are described. Corticosteroid therapy, if started early, was found to give excellent results, and one yr treatment was adequate. Out of the eight patients treated, three made complete recovery, three made incomplete but good recovery and two patients showed no improvement. The patients were followed up over a period varying from three yr to six and a half yr.
