Abstract
The emergence of institutional ranking systems has reshaped the academic environment. With research output becoming an important criterion, institutions have increasingly emphasized academic research visibility. Though this has led to increased research output, it has also resulted in the mushrooming of predatory academic events. Predatory academic events are deceptively organized meetings that present themselves as legitimate scientific forums but primarily serve commercial interests. We attempt to explore the characteristics of predatory events, and countermeasures against such events.
