Abstract
Blood collected from a patient for retransfusion to the same patient at a later time is called 'autologous blood'. A small study of autologous transfusion is presented. The study covering the period Oct. 1988-March 1989, included 50 patients undergoing elective urologic surgery. Preoperative deposition of blood was done. Of these, 26 (52%) required transfusion perioperatively with autologous blood and 6 (12%) needed homologous units. The problems, advantages and disadvantages of autologous transfusion are discussed.
