Abstract

In this study the progressive collapse behavior of Steel and RCC Moment resisting frames has been studied using the Alternate Load Path method recommended by the General Services Administration (GSA 2000). The linear dynamic method of analysis has been adopted to arrive at the most critical location of column removal among the three critical locations identified based on the GSA guidelines. The study has been carried out on 15 story 3D Steel and RCC MRFs and designed for seismic zone 5 as per Indian Standards using ETABS. The Time History analysis has been performed on the structure using real time earthquake data on the Steel and RCC frames. Significant increase in the values of maximum bending moment in the beams were observed after the loss of the column elements when compared to the intact structure. Further based on the values of vertical displacement obtained the corner location of column elimination proved to be most critical.
