Abstract

The imperative to incorporate renewable energy sources into distribution systems is magnifying, pressurizing grid infrastructure to accept the inherent stochasticity of renewable generation. In this survey, investigation is done for the pivotal contribution of FACTS in expressing the embodiment of RES into transmission and distribution system. With the global recognition and usage of RE, distribution network and transmission face some defiance with respect to regulation of voltage, power reliability management, and grid stability. To address these concerns FACTS devices assists dynamic control capabilities consequently facilitating the consistent enactment of renewable energy into distribution grids. With an elaborative inclusion of existing literature and empirical studies, this paper elucidates the various operational mechanisms, control methodologies, and study of deployment strategies of all categories of FACTS devices, such as Static VAR Compensators, UPFC and Static Synchronous Compensators. By mentioning future research directions this paper aimed at harnessing the full potential of FACTS devices in facilitating the transition towards sustainable and resilient distribution and transmission systems powered by renewable energy sources.
