Role of Flow Cytometry in the Rapid Assessment of Organ-Specific Toxicity

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingChapter

Abstract

Flow cytometry has been an integral part of toxicity testing in biological models. The simultaneous assessment of cellular parameters using fluorescent dyes aids in the detection of responses to various endobiotic or xenobiotic toxicants at cell, tissue, and organ levels. The effects of toxicants are monitored by the decrease in cell viability, inflammation, expression of receptors on the cell surface, and cell death, and these parameters are analyzed for a comprehensive understanding of the toxicological impacts. Given its wide range of applications, flow cytometry has been extensively utilized in in vitro, pre-clinical, and clinical toxicity testing. The high-throughput analysis of samples makes it an essential technique for developing new and improved toxicity testing methodologies, aiding in toxicological and pharmacological advancements.
