Role of Nano Fillers on Mechanical Properties of Reinforced Natural Fibers Epoxy Composites: An Overview

Research output: Contribution to journalReview articlepeer-review

Abstract

This review paper examines how natural fiber nano-fillers reinforced epoxy composites offer a viable solution to mitigate environmental impacts while enhancing the mechanical strength of the polymer matrix. Natural fibers, chemical treatments, types of polymers, polymer composites, mechanical properties and increment in mechanical strength with the addition of nano fillers are discussed in this review. Further, applications of natural fiber polymer composites in numerous commercial sectors are discussed. It is concluded that the natural fiber type, chemical treatment, matrix material, nano or natural filler addition and percentage ratio of natural fiber, matrix materials and fillers affect the mechanical properties of composites. Moreover, this review critically identifies the existing research gaps in natural fiber reinforced epoxy composites incorporating nano-scaled fillers, particularly concerning dispersion, size of nano fillers, percentage ratio in matrix, interfacial bonding, and agglomeration. Future research is advised to overcome these obstacles so that nano fillers pave the way for their expansion into a wide range of natural fiber composites applications.
