Abstract

Onychomycosis is a disease caused by dermatophytes that are hyaline septated molds which affects the nail plate. The prevalence rate of Onychomycosis occurrence is estimated on the basis of age due to poor peripheral circulation or diabetes, climate, reduced growth of nail, immunodeficiency condition and modern lifestyle leading to absence of nail maintenance. The percentage of affected children are less compared to the adults or elderly people. Most of the rural people are affected by this disease. In fishing community people the prevalence rate is very high. Awareness of the disease among the people is uncertain. Hence, the diagnosis of the disease is delayed which results in less chances for the cure of the disease. This article gives an insight into the various aspects of Onychomycosis and its possible treatment regimen.
