Abstract

Plant-based proteolytic enzymes include papain, bromelain, actinidin, and ficin. These enzymes have been tried and tested for numerous applications in the professional as well as personal oral health care. The range of applications include basic oral hygiene maintenance via dentifrices, as anti-inflammatory and adjuvant to antibiotics in postoperative management, possible role in management of cancer and oral mucositis, caries excavation, and increasing bond strength for bonding orthodontic brackets. Literature pertaining to these areas has been reviewed, and findings have been discussed with future scope for research.
