Abstract

Cancer, the abnormal proliferation of cells, is one of the leading causes of death in the world. A number of challenges hamper its treatment regime, such as ineffective drug concentration reaching the target site, nonspecific distribution of drug and acquired resistance upon chemotherapy due to various drugs and dosage. With a deeper understanding of tumor biology and the advancement in pharmaceutical technology, drug delivery vehicles have been recognized as a suitable approach in its treatment. This anticancer therapy aims to improve the pharmacokinetics of the drug, accumulate the drug at the target site and reduce the toxic effects on healthy tissues. This chapter provides an insight into the approach to the treatment of cancer, the advances in 3D tumor model studies, the various drug delivery strategies adopted and the challenges identified while working with these drug delivery systems.
