    Abstract

The future of wireless communication is shifting towards a novel technology called visible light communication (VLC) that could modernize its future. The existing wireless communication systems using radio-frequency spectrum suffer from interference and high latency issues. VLC provides an alternative solution for the above limitations because of its immunity to interference from other electromagnetic sources and high bandwidth. VLC combines the communication and illumination technologies simultaneously to provide a fully networked solution for multiple users. Cyber-physical system (CPS) is a mechanism controlled by computer-based algorithms, which is integrated with the Internet and the physical world. Autonomous automobile systems, avionics, industrial automation systems, medical monitoring, process control systems, robotic systems, smart grid, vehicular networks and wireless sensor networks are some of the examples of CPSs. Due to the small size of CPSs, they have limited storage and computation capabilities and being embedded into larger systems. The growth in the field of cloud computing and Internet of things has opened several new opportunities for CPSs to extend their capabilities. In this paper, VLC has been proposed to be integrated with CPSs, aiming to improve the user’s experience, provide faster response, addressing reliability and safety challenges, and provide a greater quality of service and resilient in case of failures. Safety for VLC-CPS integrated systems is a critical phase and requires new design methods. The architecture, security, and privacy issues related to CPSs are investigated first and then the integrated with VLC. This paper gives a clear understanding of the relationship between VLC and CPS in realizing an intelligent cyber-physical world. An outline of few CPS uses cases and is analysed for their safety, security and real-time design requirements.
