Abstract
The response of a framed structure having six degrees of freedom (three translations alongx, y, z-axes and three rotations about these axes) at each node, with tuned mass dampers (TMD) on its top, subjected to bi-directional harmonic ground motion, and EI Centro earthquake ground motions, was studied. The effect of structural damping, TMD damping mass ratio, structural time period and excitation frequency on the response of structure having tuned mass dampers on its top was investigated. A four-storey space frame structure with consistent mass system was considered to study this effect. The response of structure with TMD was found to be less in comparison to the corresponding response without TMD, implying that the TMD was effective in reducing acceleration, forces and displacement in the system. It was also found that the structural damping TMD damping mass ratio and excitationfrequency have considerable influence on the response of a structure having TMD on its top.
