Abstract

Smart grid gives a new and improved vision for electricity infrastructure. The vital element of the smart grid is the bidirectional communication between the grid and its users. Hence, communication plays a basic role in establishing the connectivity between various constituents of the smart grid. One must have a detailed understanding of various aspects of communication to establish robust network connectivity. Integration of network components from various vendors may not follow the same set of canons, thereby, it becomes difficult to establish a network that can be accepted globally. Thus, before deploying a network in real-time, it is always recommended to test the model using simulation tools, where, various standards can be tested by changing key parameters. Once the optimum solution is achieved in the simulation, it can be deployed using the hardware components. With this intent, this paper provides a systematic review of the key IEC and IEEE standards related to smart grid communication and networking.
