Abstract

The increasing rate of energy demand in the recent times is unprecedented and it is driving the increasing demand of renewable distributed generations in distribution system on a large scale. This significantly brings uncertainty to grid operation. Inadvertent islanding of microgrid is a major issue in today’s smart distribution grid. An efficient islanding detection technique is introduced in this paper for a renewable distributed generation-based microgrid. A micro-phasor measurement unit (µPMU) is employed as an islanding detection device. Spectral kurtosis (SK) of negative sequence angle of voltage signals is employed for detecting islanding instants. The implementation is demonstrated in an IEEE 34 node test feeder simulated in MATLAB/Simulink software.
