Abstract

Condensation of 2-acetyl benzofuran (1) with different aromatic aldehydes in alcoholic NaOH afforded different chalcones (2). Cyclocondensation of these chalcones with o-phenylenediamine gave benzofuran benzodiazepines (3). The synthesized compounds were evaluated for antimicrobial, sedative and hypnotic activities.
