Synthesis and hypolipidemic activity of a thiazolidinone derivative

A new molecule, incorporating a p-methoxyphenyl ring, a thiazolidin-4-one and a nicotinoyl moiety, was synthesized and evaluated for its effect on serum total cholesterol, triglyceride and transaminases in rats. The effects were compared with those of nicotinic acid, a well-known hypolipidaemic drug. The compound, 2-(4-methoxyphenyl)-3-nicotinamidothiazolidin-4-one, exhibited hypolipidaemic effect comparable with that of nicotinic acid. However, unlike nicotinic acid, it did not elevate the serum transaminase levels. The present investigation has revealed the hypolipidemic effect of the thiazolidinone derivative, which warrants a detailed study.
