Total internal reflection dependent polarization preserver and dynamic electro-optically controllable polarizer using liquid crystal

Research output: Contribution to journalArticlepeer-review

Abstract

Miniaturised structural elements for dynamic control of polarization are beneficial for integrated photonic devices. Therefore, the presented proposal focuses on polarization conservation of linearly polarized light at 1550 nm and voltage-induced tunable polarization through an electro-optically tunable multilayered configuration. It uses a ZnSe prism and E44 liquid crystal layer sandwiched amid transparent thin films of boron doped diamond. The structure allows the phase angle of reflected light to cover a wide tunability range of about 4π through electro-optical modification of E44 refractive index, thereby enabling the light's polarization state to be actively fine-tuned from linear to circular to elliptical condition.
