Abstract
The median survival time for glioblastoma (GBM), a particularly deadly tumor, is roughly 16 months. A recent study has made possible new information regarding the remarkable heterogeneity of this type of brain cancer. But one characteristic that all GBM subtypes have in common is an aggressive invasion of the surrounding tissue. In the context of curative therapy, invasive GBM cells present a challenge to both focal therapies and surgery. One of the primary causes of the tumor’s aggressiveness is its heterogeneous cellular makeup, which comprises inflammatory cells, blood vessel cells, differentiated tumor cells, and tumor stem cells. These cells all affect different biological systems connected to the development of cancer at the same time. In general, “tumor heterogeneity” refers to both intratumor heterogeneity, or variations inside individual tumor cells that impact therapy response and result, and intertumor heterogeneity, or variations in the population as a whole. The goal of this chapter is to provide readers with a thorough grasp of the variations in intrinsic tumor-cell characteristics and microenvironmental cues that facilitate the processes of spontaneous glioma invasion in GBM patients. While intratumor heterogeneity in GBM is well-documented, the intertumor mutational landscape is comparatively homogeneous. This study addresses the intertumor heterogeneity of CNS malignancies, which has led to the current categorization of gliomas. This chapter also talks about genetic programming that might affect GBM cells’ flexibility and ability to spread, in addition to their various invasion patterns.
