Abstract
Shedi soil is an expansive soil and display s affinity towards water as in when it comes in contact with water it expands and when it loses water, it shrinks. This property of expansive and shrinkage cause variety of problems for engineered structures built over this soil. In this research the soil has been stabilized by adding Lime and coconut shells in varying percentages by: Weight of soil. Various rests have been earned out to determine the strength properties such as specific gravity, consistency limits, compaction tests and direct shear tests. The aim of this project is to study the changes induced in the soil on addition of admixtures such as lime and coconut shells. After collecting samples from one borrow pits in Manipal in the state of Kamataka, we performed preliminary• tests on them for identification and classification purposes, followed by the consistency limit rests. We also perfonned engineering property tests (Sieve size and Hydrometer analysis, compaction, Direct shear) both before and after the addition of 5%,10% and 15% coconut shell and of 5%, 10% and 15% Lime contents. The results of this project has thrown light on how lithomargic shedi soil can be stabilized if mixed with additives such as lime and coconut shells and can be successfully used in various ways to minimize the disadvantages of such soil.
