Abstract

In this study Al7075 alloy is reinforced with grey cast iron (GCI) particulates using two step stir casting method. The weight percentages of reinforcements were varied in steps of 2wt% from 2-6wt%. The combined effect of reinforcements and precipitation hardening treatment on wear resistance was studied. The wear resistance of the composite was correlated with the base matrix material. The effect of variation in aging temperature on the improvement in wear related properties were studied. The desirable properties were enhanced as the weight percentage of reinforcements increased both in as cast and heat treated condition. The aging process was accelerated due to the presence of articulate reinforcements. The combined effect of GCIp and age hardening at 100ᴼC significantly improves the wear resistance. There is an increase in the number of nucleation sites for the precipitation of finer secondary phase particles due to the presence of reinforcement particulates.
